Tummy Tuck in Syracuse, NY

A tummy tuck removes loose lower abdominal skin and repairs the muscle separation that commonly follows pregnancy, which is the part core exercise cannot close. The incision sits low, below the bikini line. Often combined with liposuction or breast surgery as a mommy makeover.

Why Tummy Tuck in Syracuse, NY Matters

A tummy tuck in Syracuse, New York, goes beyond just taking away extra skin. That is the detail that many people miss. This surgery can also pull together loose belly muscles, slim down the middle, and firm up your core in a way that food choices and gym time cannot always do by themselves.

At Premier Aesthetics, the plan is built around your anatomy and your goals. Dr. Leo J. Urbinelli looks at the full picture. Skin quality. Muscle tone. Scar placement. The way the lower abdomen sits when you stand, bend, or twist. That level of attention matters. The result should look like your body, just more put together.

What can a tummy tuck improve?

  • A tummy tuck may help with:
  • Loose skin around the abdomen
  • Separated stomach muscles
  • A bulge that stays even after weight loss
  • Stretch marks in the lower belly area
  • A softer waistline after pregnancy
  • Skin folds that get in the way of clothing and movement

Some patients come in after losing a lot of weight. Others after childbirth. Some are simply done, waiting for skin to tighten on its own. It often does not.

The Part Exercise Cannot Reach

Two things happen to an abdomen after pregnancy or substantial weight change, and neither responds to training.

The first is skin. Once it has stretched beyond its ability to recoil it does not come back, however much weight comes off. Creams and devices do very little to skin that has genuinely lost elasticity.

The second is muscle. The two vertical bands of the rectus abdominis separate down the midline during pregnancy, a condition called diastasis recti. The gap lets the abdomen push forward, producing a bulge that core work makes no better, because strengthening a separated muscle does not bring the halves back together.

A tummy tuck addresses both, which is also why someone whose only issue is localized fat does not need one.

Full Tummy Tuck or Mini

A full tummy tuck treats the abdomen above and below the navel. Skin is released up to the ribs, the muscle separation is repaired along its length, excess skin is removed, and the navel is brought out through a new opening. It is the right operation for most people who have had children.

A mini tummy tuck treats only below the navel, with a shorter incision and no navel repositioning. It suits a narrow group: a little loose skin low down and no separation or laxity above the navel. Most people who hope they are candidates for a mini are not, and hearing that at the examination is better than hearing it afterward.

Who It Suits

Weight should be stable for several months, because further loss will leave new laxity and gain will stretch what was tightened. It is best done once you are finished having children, since a later pregnancy will undo a muscle repair.

Smoking has to stop well in advance. The lower abdominal skin is moved a long way from its blood supply, and nicotine narrows the small vessels that keep it alive, which makes healing problems considerably more likely.

The Procedure and Recovery

The incision runs low across the lower abdomen, placed so that underwear and swimwear cover it. Drains are commonly used for the first week or so. Operating time depends on whether liposuction or breast surgery is combined with it as a mommy makeover.

Expect to be bent slightly at the waist for the first days and upright within a week or two. Most people are comfortable with daily activity at around two weeks and cleared for unrestricted exercise at about six. Swelling settles over several months.

Risks

Fluid collection under the skin, delayed healing at the center of the incision where the blood supply is furthest from its source, numbness below the navel which is normal and often lasting, a permanent scar that takes a year to mature, and the clotting risk of any longer operation, managed with early walking.

Recovery after tummy tuck surgery

Recovery takes patience. There is no clean shortcut there. The body needs time to heal. Swelling is normal. Tightness is normal. Sitting up, standing, walking, all of it feels different at first.

The early part can be frustrating. Then small things start to shift. Less pulling. Better movement. The stomach begins to settle. That is usually when patients start feeling the surgery was worth it.

Signs You May Be Ready for a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is not for every person with belly concerns. Some people just need weight stability or a different routine. Others have loose skin and muscle laxity that no workout can repair. That is where surgery starts to make more sense.

You may be ready if:
Your lower stomach still hangs after major weight loss
Your abdominal muscles feel weak or separated
Pregnancy left you with loose skin that never improved
You hide your midsection in clothes all the time
You want a longer-lasting contour and not a temporary fix

This is where honesty matters. If the skin and muscle layer have changed too much, non-surgical options often fall short. That is just the truth.

Why Patients Choose Premier Aesthetics

Premier Aesthetics gives patients a place to talk about their body concerns. No pressure. No glossy sales talk. Just a direct review of what is going on and what can realistically be done.

Dr. Urbinelli brings experience with both cosmetic and reconstructive care. That matters in tummy tuck surgery because the abdomen is not just skin. It is support, tension, balance, and healing. A surgeon who understands this can make better choices in the operating room.

What patients often value

  • Clear answers from Dr. Urbinelli without mixed messages
  • A plan shaped around real anatomy
  • Attention to scar placement
  • A flatter abdomen without a stiff look
  • Honest expectations about healing and results

People usually come in carrying years of frustration. Loose skin after pregnancy. A stomach that never bounced back. An old weight loss goal was finally met, but the skin stayed behind. That can wear on confidence more than people admit.

Tummy Tuck Surgery and Body Balance

A tummy tuck can change how the whole body feels in clothes. Shirts lie better. Pants sit differently. The midsection stops pulling focus. That may sound small, but it is not small to the person living in the body every day.

Dr. Urbinelli’s tummy tuck procedure also fits into a broader body shaping plan for some patients. Not always. But sometimes the abdomen is one piece of a larger issue after pregnancy or major weight loss. That is where thoughtful planning helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Urbinelli’s tummy tuck procedure can improve the loose, sagging belly skin, remove unsightly stretch marks, flatten the distended or bloated belly “look” due to the six-pack (rectus abdominus) muscles separating and give patients a more fit and tighter waistline that diet and exercise alone cannot achieve.

No.  Both men and women can benefit from tummy tuck. A smaller portion of men  (and women who haven’t been pregnant) have a full distended abdomen due to muscle diastasis of the six-pack muscles (rectus abdominus) which can be repaired with a tummy tuck.  Also if men or women want to remove excess skin after weight loss so they fit into clothes better, have less rubbing/chaffing and gain greater confidence at the beach, then a tummy tuck is for them.

Recovery from tummy tuck with muscle repair is typically 1-2 weeks away from in-person work (depending on profession), although you are up and walking the same day of surgery.  Gone are the days of bedrest or hospital stays for this procedure, as it has gotten much better in it’s recovery due to better approaches before, during and after surgery to get people up and moving sooner.  No heavy lifting is recommended for 6 weeks and no vigorous exercise  for that amount of time as well but walking is encouraged on day #1.  For mini-tummy tucks (no muscle repair) recovery is faster as it is primarily skin removal and liposuction so in 2-3 weeks people can return to gym and work they can return even sooner (depending on profession).

Swelling subsides over weeks to months and final contours are apparent 3-6 months after surgery with scars looking their best 1-2 years later (but hidden well below underwear line).

No and yes.  In underwear and bathing suit your scars won’t be visible.  The only scars for a tummy tuck are your new belly button “exit” site where your native belly button comes back through to the surface of the the midline of the belly and the low horizontal bikini line scar.  The belly button is a scar from when you were born at time of “cutting the umbilical cord” and the low horizontal bikini scar fades over time and is never invisible in the nude but should be imperceptible in a low riding pair of underwear.

Yes.  It often is combined with breast or chest procedures (such as breast lift, breast augmentation or chest contouring/gynecomastia procedures for men).  Sometimes patients wish to perform liposuction to thighs, around the circumference of their waist/back or even their arms during the tummy tuck.  All of these could be performed at the same time (pending evaluation with your surgeon and assessment of the patient’s medical suitability and health status).

After doing a thorough research for a plastic surgeon, I had a consultation with Dr Leo Urbanelli I immediately felt at ease talking to him about what I was hoping to accomplish. His depth of his knowledge and skill as a surgeon became obvious as he discussed the variations of my options. Dr. Leo would look at a particular area of my face and tell me what he could do and how it would look. He spent a great deal of time with me and answered all my questions and concerns. We both decided what would be the best procedure for me. I am just 8 weeks post surgery and my face, neck and brow lifts came out so much better than I could have possibly imagined. The stages of my recovery were exactly what he said they would be. I knew what to expect and how I would feel as my recovery progressed. He truly takes great pride in his work and cares deeply for his patients. He has always been available day, night and even weekends. He is an incredibly talented surgeon and the most thoughtful person you will ever meet. He is a true artist.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about my experience. I was extremely nervous going into this, and from the very first appointment, he made me feel completely at ease. He took the time to listen, explain everything clearly, and truly understand my concerns. He treated a cyst-like spot for me and repaired an area that kept reopening, something that had been both frustrating and worrisome. The results have been amazing, and I couldn’t be happier. Not only did he fix the issue, but he did so with such care and precision. What really stood out to me was his kindness and attention to detail. At one point, he even noticed and studied some of my old scars, which honestly made me giggle—it’s clear he sees things through a very skilled and thoughtful lens. His passion for what he does really shows. I’m so grateful I trusted him with something I was so scared to do. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a talented, compassionate surgeon.

I met with Dr. Leo in 2025 with anxiety and hesitation, I left with hope. During my visit he was patient, empathetic, and kind. He brought to light an issue of Lipedema that has plagued me for decades. After two procedures, I can say his professional skills and bedside manner are unmatched. I’m looking forward to a life of no limitations and more confidence, while looking better than I have in years. Thank you!

Dr. Urbinelli is the best! He performed a breast reduction on me in December 2024 and choosing him as my surgeon was the best decision I have ever made. My results are exactly what I asked for and my self-confidence has increased tremendously. I am now able to live an active lifestyle without being uncomfortable or in pain. I consulted with other surgeons and none of them made me feel as confident and comfortable as Dr. Urbinelli did. He treats his patients like family and it is so evident that he loves what he does. Anytime I had a question or concern, Dr. Urbinelli got me in the office within one or two days to address my concern (and often offered to do virtual appointments so I didn’t have to take too much time out of my day to travel to the office). Upstate NY is so lucky to have a plastic surgeon as knowledgeable, professional, and talented as Dr. Urbinelli. I would recommend him to anyone!

From my very first consultation through surgery and recovery, he was attentive and never made me feel rushed, always taking the time to answer my many questions with patience and care. This experience has truly been life-changing. Not only am I thrilled with the results of my abdominoplasty, but my confidence and overall mental well-being have improved in ways I didn’t expect. I feel more like myself again and genuinely excited about the future. I cannot recommend Dr. Urbinelli highly enough—he is an exceptional surgeon and a truly caring professional.

I cannot praise Dr. Urbinelli and the staff of Syracuse Plastic Surgery enough for the care which was given to me during my recent surgery and recovery. Dr. Urbinelli is caring person and an artist at what he does. He was responsive to all my needs especially due to an unforeseen issue during my recovery. Dr. Urbinelli even made a house call to teach my sister how to dress my wound. I traveled far from Las Vegas to Syracuse, NY because he is a reconstructive facial specialist. I am so pleased with my results. I highly recommend Dr. Urbinelli for any reconstructive or plastic surgery you may need.

I waited as long as possible to write this review because I was holding out hope that I could leave a rave, 5-star review, but I can't. I had a revision surgery in August of 2023, in an attempt to correct my breathing and fix countless issues the first surgeon left behind. Knowing this surgery wouldn't be a small task, I tried to remain patient and hopeful with Dr. Urbinelli and team that all would go great. It didn't. My breathing is the same, if not worse, than before (which is terrible). It feels like I am suffocating all day, every day. The aesthetic of my nose has gotten worse (fat, asymmetrical, twisted, etc.). The columella scar is still visible. Swelling refuses to go down. I still have a septal perforation, collapsed nasal valves, deviated septum, and enlarged turbinates. He used a cadaver rib, which seems to be curved and feels rock hard, which is extremely annoying. I have a foul odor that has been persistent since surgery. And when I can't smell that, my sense of smell is practically non-existent. The entire process has been miserable and extremely frustrating. I did everything (and more) that I was told. Taping, Vaseline, elevation, icing, no exercise, sprays, cleanses, follow-up appts. every single thing. Yet, I still can't breathe, my nose looks terrible, in my opinion...and I'm out thousands of dollars. I am bummed to leave a poor review because I truly did want it to be positive, but I can't at this time. The surgery failed, and now I'm left with very few options to actually get this fixed. Regretful is an understatement. Dr. Urbinelli is nice, did a good job with bedside manner, and the anesthesiologist did a great job. Unfortunately, the office staff and Dr. Urbinelli were unresponsive many times after surgery, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Overall, it is frustrating, mentally debilitating, and I'm at a loss for what to do next. If you're looking to get surgery done for breathing issues or reconstruction of the nasal area, I would suggest going to a nose specialist instead of a general plastic surgeon.

Cost and Coverage

A tummy tuck for contour is cosmetic and not covered by insurance. A panniculectomy, which removes an overhanging apron of skin for medical reasons without repairing muscle, is sometimes covered where documented symptoms exist. They are different operations with different results. See financing options.

Dr. Urbinelli trained at NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital and is an Active Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. See the gallery, all services, read about body contouring, or book a consultation.
